Not my freezer. No, really, it’s not.
Mr. Fixit here again, this time tackling the freezer that gets cold but doesn’t freeze. Once I got the garage cleaned out enough to move the freezer (it’s an upright model, Frigidaire FFU14FK1DW2), I found that I couldn’t remove the coil cover inside because it is held in place by a solid block of ice. Well, there’s your problem. The freezer is now sitting out in the driveway and, hopefully, it will thaw by nightfall. Anyway, my best guess is that the defrost thermostat is bad. It should be a pretty easy repair—once it thaws out. Does anybody have any suggestions for anything else to check?

Let’s pretend you asked this to Amazon reviewers:
“Never worked on that freezer, so I can’t help you. Good luck though!”
Translation: I could have ignored this question which is sent to everyone who reviews this product, but for some reason I feel obligated to respond, even if it doesn’t help in even the slightest way. Now I can feel better about myself thinking I actually helped. I also leave reviews like “fast shipping,” and give 5 stars for that, on a product review.

I’ve had this happen on a couple fridge/freezer combos, but never a dedicated freezer. Both times it was a solenoid/switch that failed to trigger the defrost cycle. Our upright deep freeze runs the cycle about 5-10x per day, which I know because I have a $7 Amazon thermostat with an audible alarm. You can tell when defrost is running because the freezer goes from zero to about 15-20 degrees, then back down again. Once yours is defrosted, it will probably work okay for a while, but it all depends on how much humidity you allow inside. Keep it closed, there's nothing to condense and freeze. You can probably limp along like this for a while. IIRC, my repairs were $150-$300 each time (parts and labor).

Interesting. The freezer is in the garage, and it has been very humid here in TX this spring. But then again, it’s always humid here. There is actually little in the freezer, mostly milk. We buy 12 gallons at a time from Costco and freeze them. The defrost thermostat is $15, so I’m going to start there. Once it defrosts. Which may be tomorrow.

I do. It’s now thawing slowly in a cooler while my freezer thaws slowly out in the driveway.

I’ve had this problem on two freezers both due to poor door seals. Even though the defrost cycle attempted to work, there was too much ice to melt. Also make sure that the drains are clear otherwise it will just back up with ice. A heat gun or hair dryer can be your friend, but it sounds like you have the time to let it fully thaw on its own.
Btw, your aviation posts are awesome.

I was right yesterday, its almost certainly the defrost timer/switch!
If you’ve got a pedistale fan laying around, blow that at it. Forced convection will melt it much faster.

Right now, it’s sitting in the sun out front. Thawing is picking up nicely. I still can’t figure out how to get to the condenser, though. The cover is supposed to simply slide up. It might still be blocked from behind with ice. Time will tell.

Yeah you can bet there’s even more ice than you can see thats hidden inside it, mine was a mess.

Like my dryer vent yesterday, this unit has received no maintenance since it went in at least 10 years ago. And the no-freezing problem has only been a noticeable problem recently. At first, things took longer to freeze, and then, new stuff simply never froze. I’m hoping it’s simply the defrost thermostat. It’s always best to start with little things and work your way upward.
Thanks for the kind words! I certainly enjoy writing them. Thanks for reading.

I was hoping to get the cover off and see just how bad it is. But that may have to wait until more, or all, of the ice is thawed.
